When Sewing Gives You Scraps

Ahh scraps, the byproduct of all sewing and quilting. We love them, collect them and wonder what to do with them while the pile keeps growing. This January was all about scraps here at the JSMQG. Members were prompted to bring in their scrappy quilts for show and tell and wow, they did not disappoint.

Deb H gave us a literal trunk show of all her scrappy quiltmaking!
Brooke C with her scrappy jelly roll quilt
Also Brooke with some scrappy blocks getting ready to assemble into a quilt
Some scrap quilt blocks that Susan A is working on
Laura S showed us some confetti blocks she’s making from scraps

Eileen D presented our Program this month, scraps and using scraps to make things that aren’t quilts. First up she showed us two quilts she’s made using nothing but leftover fabric aka scraps from previous projects.

This one is called the Village
And some scrappy Orange Peels placed on scrap pieces of low volume prints!

And then Eileen gave some examples of small projects that are super scrap friendly

Small strips of fabric sewn onto webbing to make some key fobs. Everyone loves these and they make great teacher and bus driver gifts.
A variety of page corner bookmarks.
English paper pieced hexies turned coaster!
Leftover and orphan/test blocks make great coasters and mug rugs.
Who does not love a good scrappy oven mitt?! These make great little gifts to return a favor.
Eyeglass cases!
Little scraps make great holiday themed coasters.

The good news is that where there are quilts, there are scraps and they just keep coming. Anyone else think they multiply while we’re not looking? We now have some inspiration for what to do with them. And if you’re just not into sewing with small scraps, pass them on. There’s always someone else who would love them, after all one man’s trash is another’s treasure!!

And now we return to our regularly scheduled show and tell.

Katie S brought in the ultimate, antique scrap quilt, a crazy quilt that has been in her family.

Some of the details.

These were constructed by MaryJane with fabric donated to the guild and will be donated as part of our Community Outreach program

Laura’s scrappy confetti blocks
A great quilt by Laura S fresh from the longarmer
Camille made herself a new bed quilt!
Two gorgeous pieces by Sherre M that she is entering into the Beachplum Quilters show.
Deb L with her finished barn quilt!
Adele, using an image to create a block for her grandson’s quilt!!

And we all made log cabin blocks using shades of blue with a yellow center for our monthly block lotto. Lucky Linda was our first winner for the new year.

Back to our sewing rooms to make some things with the ever growing scrap pile. See you in February with our scrappy hombre heart blocks

Happy sewing!
