November

Wow this year is flying by! It’s Fall at the Jersey Shore and there are leaves everywhere including at Old Spool Sewing Studio. Our newest member, Cathy F. who has just fit in like we’ve known her forever, gathered them all and took them home with her to make a quilt! Yay!!

They are gorgeous!

One of us loved them so much she couldn’t stop at one block. Nope, MaryEllen C took such a liking for those leaves she made a quilt for herself, she didn’t even wait to see if she won the blocks she just made her own!!

There’s MaryEllen on th right showing us her Autumn leaf quilt!
Here we have Adele showing us how she took a yard of a border print fabric and made a table runner and placemats and we were all enamored with it and asked if she’d show us how.
Another work of art by Adele B
And because she had already gifted the quilt, Adele brought in this photo of a modern sailboat quilt that she’d made.
Lauren C won third place in the MQGs Biodiversity Quilt Challenge. So we’ll deserved! Yay Lauren!
Sherre participated in a Jaybird Quilts sewalong and this quilt is amazing. Photos don’t do it justice. Bravo sherre!
While at a retreat last month, Sherre made this quilt along with friends.
At the same retreat, each quilter made a block for all of the fellow retreaters resulting in this quilt also from Sherre
And because she hasn’t been with us in a while, Sherre had this modern Christmas quilt to show us!
Not an actual quilt, but a wooden barn quilt. Brandy made this when we had our barn quilt class last month. This one really came out fabulous. We’ll be getting all the barn quilts together next month for a reunion.
At last years holiday celebration, Susan A won A LOT of fabric in a game of Left Right Center. Taking inspiration from a pattern we were given by the Free Spirit fabric rep last month, she was able to use approximately one tenth of her winnings to make this quilt. It is beautiful!
MaryJane P showed us this fantastic star quilt she made very long ago.
The back of MaryJanes quilt is like a second quilt!
And a cute little jacket MaryJane made a while back, which she actually fashioned with the “wrong” side of the fabric because she liked it better. Good call MJ!! And hard to believe but our resident button expert has yet to put some on her own jacket!
A freshly quilted jelly roll race quilt by Laura S
This one from Laura S was made with all floral fabrics
And quilted with a leaf design!
This is an epic paper pieced quilt that June M made during the pandemic. It is huge! And beautiful!

Another finished jelly roll race quilt from Eileen D
And Eileen recreated a quilt she made nine years ago as a surprise gift for one of her seven sisters. The Star Plus Quilt.

We did something a little different this month and asked members to bring in a project they were stuck on so we could brainstorm some help for them. Or something you had an idea for and needed help getting started or a project maybe you were ready to pass on to someone else. Here’s some of what we helped our friends with.

Christine S needed some guidance on how to best quilt this absolutely stunning Celtic quilt. There’s an entire fable that this quilt is based on and it was just fascinating to hear Christine talk about it. In the end I think we all agreed that this quilt deserves some professional custom quilting and we were able to give Christine a couple of recommendations of custom quilters.
This was a good one! Helen B cut up her jelly roll race quilt into triangles. She then cut some solid color triangles that coordinated with the colors. She had a plan! But then she started second guessing that plan and pretty soon we were all adding and removing pieces and switching up the fabrics and Helen may have left with an idea!!
And then Anne H wowed us with this thrifted quilt in need of repair and Anne was in need of some guidance on how to repair it. As they say two heads are better than one. Well at least a dozen put their heads together and Anne has the direction she was looking for. Lauren also brought in a pile of orphan blocks that she was ready to rehome and every one of them left with a new owner! This was all great fun and a learning experience for everyone.

Next time we’re together we will be celebrating the holiday season and yet another wonderful year as a guild. See you then.
