We’re Back

We had some time off from blogging to deep dive into so many exciting projects and events we are working on and we’re back now. We met in September and our beloved “block lotto” continued with pineapple blocks. How gorgeous are they? And Elizabeth gets to call them all hers!

Such exciting things happening in our little guild this Fall and beyond. Next month we will have a special guest at our meeting, a representative of Free Spirit Fabrics is going to be joining us with a trunk show and lecture on the fabric designing to making process. That’s going to be so interesting!

Also in October we will be getting together at member Deb H’s home, where she will walk us through the process of painting our very own Barn Quilt!! Barn Quilts are depictions of quilt blocks typically painted on the sides of barns. They were used as an early form of navigation, with directions sounding something like “make a left at the churn dash”. There are barn quilts and barn quilt trails all over this country. Pretty soon there’ll be one right here on the Jersey Shore. This project has been a long time coming and we are so excited for it! Stay tuned for pictures!

Because our first quilt exhibit was such a huge success, I am pleased to announce that we will be back on the Belmar Arts Council calendar for FEBRUARY 2025. Keep an eye out for all the details and of course save the date.

I’m constantly bragging about the talent amongst us. Every one of us brings something unique to our guild and it’s what makes our group so special, coupled with the fact that we’re all so willing to teach and share with one another. MaryEllen C is one of our resident art quilters. She can literally look at anything and turn it into a fabric work of art. And she’s quite humble and cavalier about her talent. She shared some of her methods with us at our meeting program this month I’m completely in awe of her gift.

A captive audience

Rumor has it that she’ll be teaching us at an upcoming workshop this technique

A work in progress.

A highlight of every guild and guild meeting is always the show and tell

A quilt by Linda D
Eileen D made a Patchwork Duffle Bag, pattern by Knot and Thread quilting, to donate to the Sussex County Child Advocacy Center, Ginnies House, for a fundraising event coming up this November. Good luck to Ginnies House!
Laura S took a three day Jean Making Workshop at Old Spool Sewing, our meeting host, and wore her show and tell to the meeting. What a great fitting, fabulous pair of custom jeans!!
Rear view, how about those pocket details? Bravo, Laura 👏
A fantastic quilt made by Katie S
And the back!
Helen B has been keeping a secret 🤫. Not only does she own a Gammil longarm, she’s been learning how to do this unbelievable custom quilting. What a delight to see!
We had a guest this month who wowed us with this creation! After the meeting she expressed to our President, Eileen D, how welcomed and at home she felt with our group. We love hearing this and suspect she may be joining us as a member.
A great quilt made by Anne H.
Last years October block lotto turned Fall quilt by Brooke C
Brooke C is participating in Home of the Gnome Angel’s 100 Days 100 Blocks and this is a progress shot. How awesome is this going to be?!! Brooke is one of the youngest members of our guild and taught herself to quilt during the Covid lockdown. It has been a joy to watch her journey as a quilter.
June M brought in this fantastic quilt to demonstrate the possibilities of foundation paper piecing. We have a sew-in upcoming for our submission this year to the International Modern Quilt Guild’s QuiltCon Community Outreach Quilt, where we will be employing foundation paper piecing for our entry. This will also be an instructional sew-in as those of us who’ve never done this will be learning the technique. I cannot wait to share more about our entry this time around. Member Lauren C was inspired by a painting and member Katie S took her vision from a sketch on graph paper to a quilt pattern design and kit for us to put together. It’s going to be a real show stopper!!

Until next time, happy sewing!
