N/A – Diane Not in Attendance
Charity Chairman Eileen D
Marty’s Place has requested 35” long tubes for stopping draft under the doors at their dog shelter. All were in agreement that we can make 17 stoppers for them. We may try to fit this in at the October Sew In. Brandy has dog themed fabric that was purchased for last year’s dog scarf project.
Deb Loeb brought a pattern for a bag needed by breast cancer patients.
We will be sewing for charity at the next meeting. Please bring your machine and basic sewing supplies. Some quilts have been donated.
Fund Raising Chairman
Nothing to report.
MQG Chairman Diane C
We are working on the Quilt Con charity project and plan to make a Shorebird Quilt. Assignments were given and fabric distributed to make two blocks finished size 5” that will be used for the wings. Blocks are due at the September meeting and quilt top will be assembled at the October Sew In. Deadline is in January for submission to MQG.
Programs Chairman Deb H
Half Square Triangle Program in Progress.
This meeting was to be about quilting the quilt taught by Diane, however Diane could not attend so Sherre and Eileen filled in.
Sherre discussed various methods of quilting including tied quilts, hand quilting with big stitches, free motion quilting, quilting with walking foot, long arm (edge-to-edge). On the long arm basting is not necessary. All were advised that you need an extra 4” extra on the back to accommodate the proper framing of the quilt. She decides the quilt design and thread choices by feel and experience. She presented a lot of information on quilting and some literature as part of the previous program presented.
Eileen managed to present an awesome program on Free Motion Quilting when asked on short notice to fill in. She spoke from a great deal of experience and showed us the tools of the trade that she said make free motion quilting easier including a Supreme Slider, gloves, and a quilt table extension that was made specific to her machine. She provided much advice and literature and said to try… try… try… It takes practice to get good at free motion. There are many tutorials to be found online.
Sew Ins Chairman Brandy B
At the September 9th Sew in we will be making the Sew Together Bag under the direction of Eileen! She has explained that we must buy the pattern and do all cutting and preparation prior to the sew-in. Have up to step 2 completed! No metal zippers should be used. You will need an 18” zipper for the outside. She suggestions getting zippers longer than the 9” suggested in the pattern. We must bring a walking foot, zipper foot, and clover clips are helpful if available.
Social Networking Chairman Shannon S
Shannon reports that last year we had 375 visitor and this year we have had 643! Visits are up and we have 26 subscribers. More consistent content is helping us to gain a following. On Instagram we have 180 followers. In comparison the Central Jersey Guild is 5 years old with 550 followers.
Regarding Mancuso show it is to be held at a new location in Edison next year and will be held April 26-29. This conversation was tabled as we are unsure whether or not to participate and there were not enough members in attendance for a full discussion. Deb has indicated that she would prefer for someone else to takeover if we participate next year and if not she will continue to help but with a committee of committed volunteers to assist. It was discussed that we have participated in the show 2 times and have not yet gained any new members as a result of the show. It may be different with the show in Edison…?
Summer Sampler is in progress and Sherre showed off her progress. This is for the Freshly Pieced Summer Sampler. She likes the sampler, but some blocks were very challenging.
Holiday Swap – We will be making the 1 Hour Basket by Kelby Sews for the Basket Swap at the December Holiday Meeting / Party. It was also mentioned that the pattern is available from Hearts & Bees.
We briefly discussed retreats and that the Central Jersey Guild holds a nice retreat in Branchburg at a nice hotel with nice sewing space.
Money must be in to the Momma Guild before the first of the year and their fee is based on the number of active members that we have this year. We need to collect dues in November and not wait until next year so that the dues are based on our current participating membership.
Belmar Fiber Arts show will be running an exhibit on 2D and 3D wearable items. September 6th is the deadline. Show is run by Belmar Arts Council. It is a non-juried show. They allow work to be sold and take a 30% commission. The show will be exhibited for one month. Up to 3 pieces can be submitted.
We were contacted by Jessica Burch Culcita regarding a fabric subscription. They offer to send a fat quarter set monthly by subscription. They offered us a free sample box. We will accept it.
